Are organising a women's protest at Fairford this Monday, 17 March, contact Sue Davies 01558 824017 or myself by e-bost/email. This is called a "gathering of grannies" and is aimed at older women who are not working on a weekday, but all women welcome. This is intended as as a sit-down protest to disrupt the smooth running of the base as war preparations are stepping up.

We are calling all women who possibly can to come to Fairford for the day.
The journey from West Wales is about 3 hours. We may book a minibus if there is enough demand.Or more than one!

We have booked a bus to go to Fairford on March 22, Saturday, for the "Flowers to Fairford" national demonstration supported by CND. This is a clash with the event in Aberystwyth but we feel it is important to focus our energies at this critical time, at the place where we can cause serious iinconvenience to the US for war. B52 bombers are now there sitting on the tarmac awaiting loading with bombs. Last weekend we tried to peacefully surround the weapons store but we didn't have enough people there to do it.
The number for bus bookings is Jean on 01267 267 272. Bydde'n da iawn se gallwn ni danfon mwy nag un bus.

Stall in Wrexham Town Centre, by M&S or, if wet, under the arch opposite Horse and Jockey pub. Come and sign the petition, buy a badge, a white ribbon for peace, or come and help.

Monday 17th March Assemble Queens Square 4.15pm.

This is a national day of “die-ins”. We plan to demonstrate the human, civilian cost of war by “dying” in the town centre. In modern war, over 80% of all casualties are innocent civilians. We plan to make this a peaceful, non-arrestable action. Please join us if you can. Come in pairs if possible as we will be organising a “buddying” system to ensure all participants can take part safely. Wear warm, waterproof clothes. Bring bandages (with “blood” if you like) and any other props. Be creative.

RHONDDA CYNON TAF

Statement on Protests Against War with Iraq

Following a meeting with trade union representatives, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Leader Pauline Jarman AM has agreed a joint strategy with the trade unions to manage the anticipated participation of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council staff in UK-wide protests and walk outs being organised by the Stop the War Coalition.

This strategy will ensure that disruption to the Council’s work is kept to a minimum should the United Kingdom Government declare war on Iraq. It has been agreed that Council staff who feel strongly on this matter be able to express their views in the following ways:
i)At 12 noon on the day that war is declared, staff will be permitted if they wish to leave their work to protest outside their workplaces for a period not exceeding 15 minutes. The trade unions have agreed to ensure that those staff working directly with vulnerable adults and children will not leave their workplace.
ii) That the political leadership of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will join with trade union representatives and members at an event at the Pavilions, Clydach Vale to mark the start of the War, where brief statements will be made by the Council Leader and by the trade unions and at which a minutes silence will be observed.
iii) Council staff working directly with vulnerable adults and children will be able to attend a protest rally outside Pontypridd railway station at 6 pm on the same day.

Commenting on the joint strategy with the Trade Unions, Council Leader Pauline Jarman AM said:

The people of Rhondda Cynon Taf have a proud history of internationalism and speaking out on moral issues and matters of social justice.

“Following a productive meeting with trade union representatives at which I was fully briefed of the UK-wide action being organised by the trade union supported Stop the War Coalition, I have agreed to proposals which will allow council staff to express their views on war with Iraq if they so wish in a way which ensures minimum disruption to Council services.”

UNISON and Stop the War spokesperson Dominic MacAskill said:

“Britain witnessed the biggest protest in its history on the 15th February when 2 million people marched through London to demonstrate against this war. Instead of listening to the will of the people, Tony Blair and the Labour Government decided instead to continue siding with the big business interests of George W. Bush’s America.
By bringing the country effectively to a halt at 12 noon on the day that war commences the people of Wales, and Britain as a whole, will be demonstrating that the democratic will of the people can not be ignored.
I would encourage all employers to be as socially responsible as Rhondda Cynon Taf C.B.C. and to help send a clear and united message that this war is unjust, illegal and unnecessary.”

EDM 842

LEGAL BASIS FOR MILITARY ACTION UNDER THE UNITED NATIONS CHARTER
05.03.03

That this House notes that the UN Charter allows for military force to be
used only as an exception and in two sets of circumstances, in self defence
and as expressly authorised by the Security Council under Chapter VII;
further notes that, in previous crises, the UN has always used the term 'all
necessary means' when authorising military action and this phrase is absent
from Resolution 1441 and the Draft Resolution proposed by the US, UK and
Spain; further notes that on 5th March, the Prime Minister did not answer
the question put to him by the honourable Member for Birmingham Selly Oak as
to whether nine affirmative votes for the Draft Resolution in the Security
Council would give clear legal authority for war against Iraq; further notes
the current legal opinion by Rabinder Singh QC and Charlotte Kilroy of
Matrix Chambers, that neither Resolution 1441 nor the Draft Resolution
individually or together, provide authorisation for Member States to use
force against Iraq and that, as a consequence, the UK would be acting in
violation of international law if it were to join in any attack on Iraq in
reliance on either or both of these resolutions; likewise is concerned that
the escalation of the bombing by the US and UK in the no-fly zones does not
obey UN rules on the use of military force; and therefore calls on the
Government to amend its policy on Iraq in line with the UN Charter and
international law.
